Day 4

Share you photos to friends and family using the Mail or Messages apps. Print your photos.

Attend Zoom on a computer or tablet so you can use your iPhone along with the demonstration.

One of the other Ren Soc Seminars - RS iOS Basics - has a wide variety of information relating to Camera and Photos in addition to reports and links about iPhone and iPad generally. Here are some specifics:

Many participants are curious about what new iPhone should they purchase next. Ohh. This is a tough decision on the many ways I can help you spend money! 😉

The website at Apple can help you Compare iPhone Models by choosing your current model and two other options and then compare the features side-by-side.

In addition to the hardware, review your online storage needs:
Photos app - Get Organized, Make Albums and Folders

Navigate back to the top Albums view. Scroll down to People & Places.  Tap on Places to open a map of where pictures have been taken - by you or by others who have shared pictures with you. Two options at the top of this screen: Map and Grid. The ( ... ) button shows menu of Aspect and Filters, tap Filters > Edited > Done. The thumbnails change. Between Grid and Select is a new button indicated the list is Filtered. Tap the icon to open options > All Items > Done. [Filters is a new feature and we can expect it to improve over the next several iOS updates.]

Navigate back to Albums list > People & Places. Tap on People. READ the User Guide for this feature.

You can create your own Albums, curate to collect the best pictures and arrange them to tell the story (instead of being locked into the date sequence). You can also create Folders and then add Albums inside the folder. You can build a hierarchy of organization. You can create your own Albums, curate to collect the best pictures and arrange them to tell the story (instead of being locked into the date sequence). You can also create Folders and then add Albums inside the folder. You can build a hierarchy of organization.

Make a new Album - in a folder! Scroll to the top of the Albums screen. Find and tap [ + ] > New Folder > 2022 Class. (Nothing happens...) Go back to Library view and find your Photo Walk photos. Find Select in the top right corner and tap the first picture, a blue check appears. Tap and hold and scroll down the screen to select more pictures. Stop at the last picture you took at the park. Tap the Share button > tap Add to Album from the list, navigate to your new 2022 Class folder. Tap New Album > type the name of your park and tap Save. Still at the Library view, tap Albums and navigate to your new album.

Curate photos in your album. Tap and hold on a picture to see it pop, a menu appears. Tap and hold and move a picture to see other pictures move out of the way. Lift your finger to drop the picture in place.  Tap and hold on a picture and move it up in the sequence. Move another photo. Haptic vibrations are an indication of movement. Don't lift your finger until the picture is where you want it to be. Move pictures down in the sequence, beyond your current view, use a finger to scroll the screen. This takes practice! More than one photo can be selected! To dismiss this edit, tap the top left button to go up the hierarchy of albums.

Curate the duplicates in your album. Look at the photo full screen to see buttons at the bottom of the screen: Share, Favorite, ( i) and Delete. Be brave ... tap Delete to see the options: Remove from Album or Delete from Library (red text!) and Cancel. Most of your photos from our photo walk activity will be deleted.

Last step in Messages - blue arrow is to Apple devices, green arrow is to android or mixed devices.

iPhone Life has two articles of interest, The Fastest Way to Save Photos from Messages on iPhone in iOS 15 and How to Save Pictures from Messages & Facebook on Your iPhone and Delete Pictures too.

Photos > For You > Shared with You is a temperamental new-ish feature. I've got the feature turned on in Settings and people in my Contact list are sending me photos and links but not everyone is showing up in Photos. Apple's quick read Use Shared with You on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch shows how For You is available in other apps.

Share. Button
It is time to personalize your Share Sheet. This is the view you see for apps and actions after pressing the Share Button (Muffy's "Sharrow").

Have you figured out that making changes to your iPhone Home Screen layouts are easy and useful depending on a current project or if you are traveling far from home.

The Share Sheet is also something you want to personalize based on current projects. Tap the Share Button to open the Share Sheet. Remember that your iPhone knows the current app as well as your other apps and Contacts.

Scroll the row of apps from right to left. The ( ... ) More button is the key to sorting the apps you favor most.

Scroll the list of actions from top to bottom.  The Edit Actions ... is the key to sorting the actions you use most often.

The Share Sheet options change depending on the app you are currently using and the content you have selected to share.

Share. AirDrop

Another reason to have people listed in your Contacts app. Change AirDrop settings on-the-fly in Control Center > tap and hold at the middle of the four circles in the top left block. Tap AirDrop in the bottom left corner to change between Receiving Off, Contacts Only and Everyone.

Open Photos app. View a picture > tap Share button > AirDrop is on the left side > tap to see available connections to on/awake devices. Use Control Center to change your AirDrop settings.

In Photos app > view thumbnails > tap Select > tap several pictures > tap Share > AirDrop > tap device to copy pictures to other device.

In a recent test, a photo AirDropped to me did not show up in Photos > For You > Shared with You.

Share. Make a Photo Album
The iPhone User Guide has a quick read for Make photo albums on iPhone. The reason to create a photo album is to curate and sort and build your story in pictures. Another quick read is Filter and sort photos in an album on iPhone

Share. Make a Photos Folder then Add Albums
The iPhone User Guide quick read for Edit and organize albums on iPhone details creating a folder then adding another folder or albums to build a hierarchy of curated photos.

Share. Airplay to AppleTV

Share. Big Screen TVs
Newer models of flat screen televisions might be AirPlay 2 enabled or have a USB port. Read your TV user manual to see if photos saved to a USB drive can be played to the screen. This is the new version of "vacation slide show" or "how I spent my pandemic lockdown."

Share. Time to Show Off Using Memories and Shared Albums

Because of you, this class, I am doing new things with the Photos app. Thank you for moving me out of old habits and looking into details and features ignored in the past. Remember our photo walk activity? My Shared Memories into Shared Album is a good example of a public link from an iCloud Shared Album. Using Shared Albums is easy and how the iPhone Photographic Studio participants exchange art, techniques and comments. In this example, albums became memories with different soundtracks and were shared to a new shared album. No subscribers have been invited to post photos, memories or videos - there is only a link to view the album online.

Here are the workflow steps (iOS 15.3 - Feb 2022):

Setup a new albums folder for this type of project

  • Open Photos to Albums view > [ + ] > New Folder > type a general name

Setup new Shared Album for exported Memories

  1. Create a title page, in Notes with instructions or reminders
  2. Make a screenshot of the Note on iPhone (or iPad)
  3. Open Photos find screenshot > Share > New Shared Album > name it for project
  4. > Next (don't invite anyone yet) > add text comments > Post
  5. Your placeholder shared album is ready
Create a project folder for specific project albums
  1. Open Photos Library to select multiple photos (a few to start)
  2. Share > Add to Album > project folder > New Album > name it for specific memory
  3. Return to Photos Library, select and add additional photos to new album
Open project album and convert to Memory
  1. Open album to view all thumbnails
  2. Tap top right corner ( ... ) to show menu > Play Memory Video
  3. Tap screen to see controls > tap Pause button
  4. Tap music notes button > swipe to see soundtrack
  5. Tap music notes to see alternative soundtracks
  6. Tap Share button > Add to Shared Album (preparing video)
  7. > navigate to Shared Album > add text comments > Post
Set shared album to be public (open to anyone with the link)
  • Open shared album for project on iPhone
  • Tap the people circle in top right corner
  • Enable Public Website > Tap Share Link > Copy
  • Open Notes page for this project > Tap to set cursor
  • Tap to bring up menu > Paste
  • Tap Done to close Notes page from editing
  • While link is on Clipboard, open a Message or new email and address to a friend.
  • Tap the screen to see the menu > Paste
Create another project album and repeat the sharing process.

Review the steps, adjust the workflow to meet your needs. Review the workflow next time there is an iOS update for changes in Photos app.

Share. Make a Picture Book

I have a demo for this way of sharing. Making an ebook will not be your next project but put it on the shelf for a future rainy day. Use the Pages app and a landscape book template to turn an album into an epub that will open in Apple Books or another ereader app on Android or Windows computers. Refer to the Pages User Guide chapter Intro to creating a book in Pages on Mac. But iPad works too.

Other options for printing books can be found at ... stay tuned and return to this page for resources our seminar participants have used.
